Patient One Red Yeast Rice with Ubiquinol optimizes cardiovascular wellness by promoting myocardial energy production and healthy circulation while supporting vascular integrity and antioxidant defenses. Red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus), used in Traditional Chinese wellness practices for centuries, is included to naturally support healthy blood lipid levels. Our formula includes Ubiquinol, the active form of Coenzyme Q10, which has been found to be suppressed in those with cardiovascular issues or who use statin drugs.
Coenzyme Q10 must be converted into its beneficial reduced form – Ubiquinol—to provide lipid-soluble antioxidant activity. Ubiquinol in supplement form is pre-converted and ready to use for patients aged 40+ who may be challenged with CoQ10 absorption and utilization. As the first antioxidant consumed when LDL particles are exposed to free radicals, Ubiquinol inhibits LDL cholesterol oxidation to promote healthy, flexible blood vessels. Naturally concentrated in the heart, Ubiquinol promotes healthy circulation and peak energy production throughout myocardial tissue. Ubiquinol may be a useful adjunct therapy for patients on cholesterol lowering drugs because it reverses the CoQ10 depletion that is strongly associated with statins. Because there is also evidence that use of red yeast rice can deplete CoQ10, co-supplementation is recommended.
Red Yeast Rice:
Red yeast rice (Monascus purpureus) is a preparation made from a yeast that is commercially grown on rice grains. The rice and yeast (red in color) are ground up into powder. Red yeast rice has been found to naturally support healthy blood lipid levels. It supplies potent bioactive compounds monacolin K (as well as related monacolins) that have secured its place as a Traditional Chinese herb for overall health and well-being.
In addition to its support of heart health, Red Yeast Rice is used to strengthen the spleen and stomach, and as such, promotes digestion, invigorates blood circulation, and eliminates blood stasis.
In one multi-center, randomized, single-blind trial, 502 patients with hyperlipidemia were treated with 600 mg of Hong Qu (Red Yeast Rice) twice daily (1200 mg total per day). After four weeks of treatment, the study reported 17% reduction in total cholesterol levels, 24.6% reduction in LDL-cholesterol, 19.8% decrease in triglycerides, and a 12.8% increase in HDL-cholesterol. After 8 weeks of treatment, the study reported 22.7% reduction in total cholesterol levels, 30.9% reduction in LDL-cholesterol, 34.1% decrease in triglycerides, and a 19.9% increase in HDL-cholesterol.
In one early study, patients with advanced congestive heart failure switched from taking CoQ10 to equivalent levels of Ubiquinol (ranging 450 - 600 mg per day). After the switch, patients’ CoQ10 blood levels increased from an average of 1.6 micrograms/ to an average of 6.5, while ejection fraction – a measure of how well the heart is pumping blood – improved from an average of 22% to an average of 39%. These changes led researchers to suggest that Ubiquinol appears to have improved absorption in patients with severe heart failure, and is accompanied by an increase in CoQ10 plasma levels that is associated with clinical improvement.
Research suggests that smaller servings of Ubiquinol are far more efficient at raising plasma levels than significantly larger servings of CoQ10: One study found that those taking Ubiquinol had a 430% increase in CoQ10 plasma levels, compared to those taking CoQ10 alone.
