Patient One Flora Maintenance is a broad spectrum, multi-species probiotic supplement with a minimum of 25 billion organisms per serving at encapsulation. Ten compatible, well-researched strains (7 found in the small intestine and 3 found in the large intestine) are combined with fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), a prebiotic. The combination of a prebiotic and a probiotic has been clinically shown to promote enhanced effectiveness.
Flora Maintenance supplies HardiStrain™ standardized bacteria cultures, produced with a proprietary system that promotes increased viability over an extended shelf life. Our freeze-dried probiotic cultures are shelf stable and provided in an acid-resistant, delayed release capsule to survive harsh stomach acids for effective delivery to the intestinal tract where the organisms can colonize and replicate.
Patient One’s proprietary probiotic blend contains signiffcant concentrations of three of the most well-documented lactobacillus strains – L. acidophilus, L. casei and L. rhamnosus. As strain identity is essential to link a culture to a speciffic health effect, the strains in our formula are enetically identiffed by a sophisticated RiboPrinter® microbial characterization system.
Key Ingredients
Flora Maintenance synergistically combines 10 health-promoting probiotic strains from four genera (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacteria,Streptococcus, and Peddiococcus) to support a more favorable balance of intestinal flora and healthy gastrointestinal (GI) and immune function.
By competing for attachment to sites on the intestinal mucosal membrane, the bacteria supplied in our formula may help inhibit attachment and overgrowth of undesirable bacteria and yeast and assist in the colonization of beneficial bacteria. Together they may also aid digestion and absorption of nutrients, stabilize bowel function and promote urinary tract and vaginal health.
While certain strains will colonize the GI tract and other functional sites such as the colon, vagina, urinary tract or mouth when regularly consumed, other strains are considered to be “transient,” exerting beneficial functions as they pass through. Two of the most recognized transient bacteria are Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus bulgaricus, and both benefficial microbes are provided in Flora Maintenance. These two strains metabolize lactose, supporting digestive function and comfort, and produce a variety of fermentation end products.
Also included in our formula is Fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS), a prebiotic from Jerusalem artichoke that acts as a nutrient source for the probiotics, supporting colonization. FOS feeds the microflora in the intestines and helps deter overgrowth of yeast. Studies have shown that probiotics are more effective when taken with fructo-oligosaccharide.
