Unique Properties

Patient One K2-D3 provides nutritional benefits for the skeletal, cardiovascular and immune systems. Vitamins K2 and D3 have complementary physiological functions, and clinical studies have shown synergistic benefit for both bone and heart health when used together.

Our formula supplies a high potency of cholecalciferol, a readily absorbable form of vitamin D (from lanolin). Vitamin D3 is most noted for optimizing calcium absorption, thereby promoting peak bone mass and bone strength.

This complex also includes vitamin K2 in the form of Menaquinone-7 (MK-7). MK-7 has the greatest half-life of all forms of vitamin K, promoting more stable levels in the body. Vitamin K2-7 supports healthy bone mineralization by directing calcium to bones rather than joint spaces and arteries.

Key Ingredients

Vitamin D3:

The body requires vitamin D to absorb calcium. Without sufficient absorption, the body must take calcium from its stores in the skeleton, which weakens existing bone and prevents the formation of strong, new bone.

Patient One supplies a high-level 250 mcg (10000 IU) serving of cholecalciferol D3 to compensate for nutritional challenges related to insuffiency or deficiency. Vitamin D production is reduced by anything that decreases the intensity of the sun's rays, such as cloud cover, seasons, time of day, smog, use of sunblock, and skin melanin content. There are very few dietary sources of vitamin D. Fatty fish and fortified milk are the best sources, although these foods may not provide enough vitamin D. In addition, vitamin D levels decline with age.

75% of Americans fail to reach recommended daily vitamin D intake, which doubles between ages 51 and 70, and triples over age 71 – making vitamin D supplementation increasingly important as we age. D3’s ability to promote normal cell growth and metabolism provides additional benefits for cardiovascular, breast, colon, prostate and immune health.

Vitamin K2, as Menaquinone-7 (MK-7):

Vitamin K is believed to be necessary for bone mineralization. Vitamin K2-7 acts as an activator of osteocalcin, allowing calcium to bind this protein to the mineral matrix of bone.

Vitamin K2-7 also supports healthy cardiac and vascular function. This form of vitamin K concentrates in the tissues of the arteries, where it helps to maintain normal calcium metabolism and support healthy vascular elasticity. Additionally, vitamin K2 may help support healthy lipid levels and promote normal insulin sensitivity.

Research

  • According to the 2004 Surgeon General’s Report on Bone Health and Osteoporosis: “The Surgeon General wants you to know that you can improve your bone health by getting enough calcium, vitamin D, and physical activity.”
  • In a meta-analysis of 12 clinical trials totaling over 42,000 adults age 65 and up, researchers found that vitamin D supplementation (at a daily level of 400 international units and above) reduced hip fractures by 18% and reduced non vertebral fractures by 20%.
  • In a study of 1,739 women with an average age of 59, researchers suggested that moderate to severe vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular problems.
  • Schurgers et al conducted human studies to compare the in vivo properties of orally administered K1 and MK-7. The results supported better bioavailability and utilization of MK-7. Expressed as AUC96, MK-7 demonstrated a six-fold better half-life, a seven- to eight-fold higher dose-response level, and a three times higher carboxylated to uncarboxylated osteocalcin ratio.
  • Several studies have demonstrated the efficacy of MK-7 (e.g., doses of 45-90 mcg per day) to increase osteocalcin carboxylation and to increase the cOC:ucOC ratio. A high cOC:ucOC ratio is associated with bone health.
